The fantasy horror nominated for six Africa Academy Film Awards classes tasks heroes and heroines of African conventional mysticism.
UK-based filmmaker and inventive multimedia designer OgoOkpue has unveiled the trailer of the film ‘A Track from The Darkish’, his first as a function movie director.
Nominated for six classes at this 12 months’s Africa Film Academy Awards, it stars Nollywood’s Nse Ikpe Etim and Wale Ojo alongside gripping performances from British Ghanaian Vanessa Vanderpuye, Lola Wayne, Garcia Brown, Peace Oseyenum and Paul Coster, amongst others.
‘A Track from the Darkish’ is a fantasy-horror positioned to mission heroes and heroines of African conventional mysticism with comparable audacity as western movies have entrenched ‘Superman’, ‘Surprise Girl’ and ‘Ironman.’
Okpue, whose brief movies like ‘Saving Cain’ and ‘Cat Face’ have been recognised and screened at main world movie festivals, disclosed the movie attracts a lot inspiration from the tales he heard as a baby every time he visited the village together with his dad and mom.
He stated: “The story’s inspiration dates again to a sure interval of my childhood when my household would go to my grandmother in our village. She occurred to be a well-respected traditionalist. Tales of her would intrigue us, and I regretted not realizing her extra as I grew older. She was an enigma, and I puzzled what it could have been like if a few of her tales have been captured in books. The world of African mysticism has not been explored sufficient in world cinema. And most occasions, it’s vilified. Americahas Superman and Iron Man; the UK has James Bond and Harry Potter. Japan and China have Flying Swordsmen and mystical Ninjas, India has tonnes.”

Okpue added that “I believe in Africa, our superheroes have slept lengthy sufficient, African tales are as various and as entertaining because the continent itself, so I assumed, ‘why not add extra African heroes to the fictional world of cinema?’ ‘A Track From The Darkish’ is not like any movie seen within the black cinematic panorama. Some name it ‘Lovecraft nation meets Buffy the vampire slayer however with a Nigerian spin’. With placing visuals, suspense-filled scenes and interesting performances, ‘A Track from the Darkish’ shouldn’t be your typical horror movie.
“If something, it embraces suspense and drama like the nice horror classics, so there’s something within the story for non-horror followers. On the coronary heart of it, it’s a household drama and a cautionary story with poignant social commentary. Its assured mix of drama and multilayered subtexts will depart viewers reaching for repeat viewing and days-long post-credit conversations.”
Slated for launch in 2023, ‘A Track from The Darkish’ obtained six AMAA nominations. These are Greatest Actress in a Main Function, Greatest Actor in a Supporting Function, Award for First Function by a Director, Michael Anyiam Osigwe Award for Greatest Movie by an African-born Director Dwelling Overseas and Award for Greatest Achievement in Make-Up.
