
Early Life and Education
Kiernan Jarryd Forbes was born on January 28, 1988, in Cape Town, South Africa, into a Christian family. He was the eldest of two children, with a younger brother named Steffan Forbes. At a young age, his family relocated to Johannesburg, where he attended St. John’s College. In 2002, Forbes, along with Vice Versa and Sizwe Mpofu-Walsh, formed the hip-hop group Entity. The group received a nomination for a KORA Award in the Best African Hip Hop category. The entity disbanded in 2006, after which Forbes pursued studies in sound engineering. 2017–2020: Be Careful What You Wish For and Touch My Blood
In 2017, AKA collaborated with Anatii on the album Be Careful What You Wish For, which was well-received. The following year, he released Touch My Blood, which featured the hit single “Fela In Versace.” The album achieved double platinum status and further cemented his influence in the African hip-hop scene.
2020–2023: Bhovamania and Mass Country
In 2020, AKA released the EP Bhovamania, followed by his fourth studio album, Mass Country, in 2023. The album featured the hit single “Lemons (Lemonade)” featuring Nasty C, which was certified 4× Platinum by the Recording Industry of South Africa. Mass Country debuted at number one on the South African iTunes chart and was later certified Platinum.

Personal Life and Legacy
AKA’s personal life was marked by high-profile relationships and public scrutiny. He began dating producer DJ Zinhle in 2014, and the couple had a daughter, Kairo Owethu Forbes, born in 2015. Their relationship faced challenges, including a brief separation in 2015 due to alleged infidelity involving television presenter Bonang Matheba. The couple reconciled in late 2018 but parted ways again in 2019. In 2021, AKA became engaged to Nelli Tembe, who tragically passed away in April 2021 after a fall from a hotel in Cape Town. Following her death, AKA faced public criticism and addressed the matter through public statements, emphasizing his desire to keep their issues private.
On February 10, 2023, AKA was tragically shot and killed outside a restaurant in Durban, South Africa, shortly after celebrating his birthday. The incident also claimed the life of his friend, Tebello Motsoane. Investigations revealed that the murder was the result of an organized hit involving multiple individuals. His death was met with an outpouring of grief from fans and fellow artists across the continent.
