Early Life and Influences

Siyabonga Nene was born and raised in Bergville, a rural town in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. His upbringing was steeped in the rich musical traditions of the Zulu people, with early influences from Maskandi and Isichathamiya genres. Artists like Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Phuzekemisi, and Imithente shaped his musical ear and storytelling approach. Before venturing into music, Nene worked as a taxi driver, a job he left in 2008 to pursue his passion for music full-time.

Breakthrough and Early Success (2016–2019)

In 2016, Big Zulu gained national attention with his single “Donsa Nkabi,” which introduced his unique blend of traditional Zulu sounds with contemporary rap. Building on this success, he signed with Universal Music in 2015 and released his debut album, Ushun Wenkabi, in 2018. The album featured tracks like “Ang’mazi Umama” and “Home,” establishing him as a prominent figure in the South African hip-hop scene. His follow-up album, Ungqongqoshe Wongqongqoshe (2019), featured collaborations with artists such as Kwesta, Musiholiq, and FiFi Cooper. The single “Ak’laleki,” featuring Kwesta, was particularly notable.​

Mainstream Dominance (2020–2022)

Big Zulu’s third studio album, Ichwane Lenyoka (2021), marked a significant milestone in his career. The album produced several chart-topping singles, including “Mali Eningi” (featuring Intaba Yase Dubai and Ricky Rick), “Inhlupheko” (featuring Mduduzi Ncube), and “Umuzi eSandton” (featuring Lwah Ndlunkulu). “Mali Eningi” was certified double platinum by the Recording Industry of South Africa (RiSA) .​

In 2022, Big Zulu released Nkabi Nation, a collaborative album that further solidified his presence in the South African music industry.​

Collaborative Ventures and Recent Projects (2023–Present)

In March 2023, Big Zulu teamed up with fellow artist Sjava to form the duo Inkabi Zezwe. Their joint album, Ukhamba, was released on May 12, 2023, debuting at number one on the South African and Eswatini charts. The lead single “Umbayimbayi” achieved triple platinum status in South Africa.​

In 2024, Big Zulu released his fourth studio album, Ngises’ Congweni, which continued his exploration of Zulu heritage and contemporary rap. The album’s lead single, “Awufuni Ukung’ Qoma,” was released in early 2024, further showcasing his evolving musical style .​

In 2021, he donated laptops and printers to Obonjaneni Primary School, emphasizing his commitment to education and community development.​
