Early Life and Family Background

Mkhululi Siqula, professionally known as Heavy-K, was born on December 4, 1991, in Veeplaas, Port Elizabeth, South Africa. He is the son of Phindlie Siqula, a mechanic. Heavy-K attended Mzimhlophe Public Primary School and Ndzondelelo Secondary School, where he began to nurture his passion for music.

Career Trajectory and Notable Accomplishments

Heavy-K’s musical journey commenced at the age of 16 when he produced “Lento,” a single for renowned South African artist Professor. In 2013, he relocated to Johannesburg to further his career, leading to the release of his debut studio album, Respect the Drumboss 2013, on January 1, 2013. The album featured collaborations with artists like Bucie, with the track “Easy to Love” achieving significant airplay. ​

In September 2015, Heavy-K released the single “Umoya,” featuring Professor and Mpumi. The track earned nominations for Best Collaboration and Best Dance Album at the 15th Annual Metro FM Awards. He continued to build on his success with the release of his third studio album, 1950, on December 2, 2016. The album included the hit single “Inde,” featuring Bucie and Nokwazi, which was certified 6× Platinum. ​

In August 2017, Heavy-K released “Inde,” featuring Bucie and Nokwazi, which achieved 6× Platinum certification. He followed this with his fourth studio album, Respect the Drumboss 2018, on October 5, 2018. In July 2020, he released “Uyeke,” featuring Natalia Mabaso, which was certified Platinum by the Recording Industry of South Africa. His fifth studio album, Khusta, was released on July 31, 2020. On November 12, 2021, Heavy-K announced a remix of Ed Sheeran’s “Shivers,” showcasing his versatility and international appeal. He concluded his “Respect the Drumboss” series with the release of Respect the Drumboss 21 (10 Years Edition) on December 3, 2021.

In 2022, Heavy-K announced his forthcoming EP, The Underrated King, releasing its lead single “Ama Miliyoni,” featuring Meez and Professor, on November 18, 2022. He further expanded his discography with the album Respect The Drumboss 2 (3-Step Edition) in December 2023, blending elements of amapiano and Afrobeat to create a dynamic musical experience. He continued to collaborate with prominent artists, releasing “Inkululeko” with DJ Tira, featuring Zee Nxumalo, Makhadzi, and Afro Brotherz, on March 1, 2024. On November 29, 2024, Heavy-K released The Anointed, an album reflecting his 18 years of artistic evolution and personal growth, dedicated to his late father. ​

Personal Life

In 2014, Heavy-K married Ntombi Nguse, whom he met in Grahamstown. The couple has two children together. However, in 2019, they divorced due to undisclosed reasons. Heavy-K has since focused on his music career, continually evolving as an artist.​
