Jermaine Lamarr Cole was born on January 28, 1985, at an American military base in Frankfurt, West Germany. His father, James Cole, an African American U.S. Army veteran, and his mother, Kay Cole, a white American postal worker from Michigan, were both military service members. When Jermaine was eight months old, his parents separated, and his mother relocated with him and his older brother, Zach, to Fayetteville, North Carolina.

Cole attended Terry Sanford High School in Fayetteville, where he was a first-chair violinist in the orchestra. Cole is married to Melissa Heholt, whom he met while they were students at St. John’s University. Heholt is the Executive Director of the Dreamville Foundation. The couple has two children together.
