Early Life and Family Background
Joseph Lewis Thomas, known mononymously as Joe, was born on July 5, 1973, in Columbus, Georgia, USA. Raised in a devout Christian household, Joe was one of five children. His parents, both evangelical ministers, instilled in him a deep appreciation for gospel music. At the age of two, the family relocated to Opelika, Alabama, where Joe’s musical journey began. He actively participated in church activities, singing in the choir, playing the guitar, and eventually directing the choir.
Education and Early Musical Pursuits
Joe graduated from Opelika High School in 1991. After high school, he continued to nurture his musical aspirations by working at a gospel record store in New Jersey. It was during this time that he met producer Vincent Herbert, who played a pivotal role in his early career. Joe recorded a three-song demo tape that eventually led to his signing with PolyGram Records in 1992. His debut album, Everything, was released the following year, marking the beginning of his professional music career.
