Early Life and Education

Kanye West was born to Ray West, a former Black Panther and photojournalist, and Donda C. West, a professor of English at Clark Atlanta University and later Chair of the English Department at Chicago State University. His parents divorced when he was three, and he relocated with his mother to Chicago, Illinois. At age 10, they moved to Nanjing, China, where Donda taught at Nanjing University as a Fulbright Scholar. During this time, Kanye immersed himself in the local culture and quickly learned Mandarin, though he has since forgotten much of it. He began writing poetry at age five and started rapping in third grade. By seventh grade, he was producing music and selling compositions to local artists.

After high school, West attended the American Academy of Art in Chicago on a scholarship, studying painting. He later transferred to Chicago State University to study English. At age 20, he dropped out to pursue a career in music, a decision that initially disappointed his mother but was later supported.

Musical Career and Artistic Evolution

The College Dropout (2004)

West’s debut album, The College Dropout, released in 2004, marked a departure from the prevailing gangsta rap of the time. The album’s introspective lyrics and soulful production, featuring tracks like “Jesus Walks” and “All Falls Down,” earned critical acclaim and commercial success, establishing West as a formidable talent in hip-hop.

Late Registration (2005)

Building on his debut, Late Registration (2005) introduced orchestral elements, thanks to collaboration with composer Jon Brion. Songs like “Gold Digger” and “Touch the Sky” showcased West’s ability to blend hip-hop with diverse musical influences, further cementing his status as a musical innovator.

Graduation (2007)

With Graduation (2007), West embraced electronic and stadium rock influences, producing anthems like “Stronger” and “Can’t Tell Me Nothing.” The album debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, reflecting his growing global appeal.

808s & Heartbreak (2008)

Following the death of his mother, West released 808s & Heartbreak (2008), an emotionally raw album that incorporated auto-tune and electronic elements. Tracks like “Heartless” and “Love Lockdown” explored themes of grief and isolation, influencing a new generation of artists.

My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy (2010)

My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy (2010) is often regarded as West’s magnum opus. The album’s ambitious production and introspective lyrics, featuring collaborations with Jay-Z, Rihanna, and Kid Cudi, earned widespread critical acclaim and multiple Grammy Awards.

Yeezus (2013)

In Yeezus (2013), West adopted a minimalist, industrial sound, challenging conventional hip-hop norms. Tracks like “Black Skinhead” and “New Slang” showcased his willingness to push musical boundaries.

The Life of Pablo (2016)

The Life of Pablo (2016) was a genre-defying album that blended gospel, hip-hop, and experimental sounds. The album’s release was accompanied by a series of elaborate listening events, showcasing West’s flair for spectacle.

Ye (2018) and Jesus Is King (2019)

In 2018, West released Ye, an introspective album that addressed his mental health struggles. The following year, Jesus Is King marked a shift towards gospel music, reflecting West’s renewed commitment to Christianity.

West has also ventured into architecture and design, founding the company Yeezy Home to build affordable housing.

Personal Life and Relationships

West’s personal life has been as public as his professional endeavors. In 2014, he married reality TV star Kim Kardashian, with whom he has four children: North, Saint, Chicago, and Psalm. The couple divorced in 2022. In December 2022, West married Australian architect Bianca Censori in a private ceremony, though without an official marriage license.

Controversies and Public Scrutiny

West’s career has been marked by numerous controversies. In 2009, he interrupted Taylor Swift’s acceptance speech at the MTV Video Music Awards, leading to widespread criticism. In 2020, he launched a brief and unconventional presidential campaign. More recently, in May 2025, he released a song titled “Heil Hitler,” which openly glorifies Adolf Hitler and includes a Hitler speech excerpt. The track was banned by major music streaming platforms but garnered nearly 10 million views on Elon Musk’s platform, X (formerly Twitter). This incident led to the cancellation of his scheduled concert in South Korea and further scrutiny of his actions.
