Mint Condition is an American R&B band that emerged from St. Paul, Minnesota, in the mid-1980s. Known for their exceptional musicianship and fusion of genres like funk, jazz, rock, and R&B, they have carved a unique niche in the music industry. Their sound, characterized by live instrumentation and soulful vocals, set them apart during an era dominated by producer-driven acts.

Early Life and Formation

Mint Condition was formed in the mid-1980s by a group of high school friends from Central High School in St. Paul. The founding members included lead vocalist and drummer Stokley Williams, lead guitarist Homer O’Dell, keyboardist Larry Waddell, keyboardist/saxophonist Jeff Allen, keyboardist/percussionist/rhythm guitarist Keri Lewis, and bass guitarist Ricky Kinchen. Kinchen, originally from Chicago, completed the lineup. The members were united by their shared passion for music and their exposure to the rich musical landscape of the Twin Cities, influenced by the Minneapolis Sound popularized by artists like Prince.

Musical Influences and Sound

Mint Condition’s music draws from a diverse array of influences, including 1970s funk bands like Cameo and Funkadelic, as well as rock acts such as Led Zeppelin. This eclectic mix is evident in their work, which blends elements of R&B, jazz, rock, and funk. Their commitment to live instrumentation and organic sound was a deliberate choice to distinguish themselves from the prevalent producer-centric trends in 1990s R&B.

Career Trajectory and Achievements

1990s: Breakthrough and Success

Mint Condition’s big break came in 1989 when they were discovered by producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis during a performance at First Avenue in Minneapolis. They signed with Perspective Records, a subsidiary of A&M Records, and released their debut album, Meant to Be Mint, on June 11, 1991. The album featured the hit single “Breakin’ My Heart (Pretty Brown Eyes),” which became a chart-topping success, reaching No. 3 on the R&B charts and No. 6 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Their follow-up album, From the Mint Factory (1993), included the successful single “U Send Me Swingin’,” which peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. The band’s third album, Definition of a Band (1996), produced the hit single “What Kind of Man Would I Be,” which reached No. 2 on the R&B charts and was certified gold.

2000s: Continued Success and Independent Ventures

After a brief hiatus, Mint Condition returned with Life’s Aquarium in 1999 under Elektra Records. The album debuted at No. 7 on the R&B charts, with the single “If You Love Me” reaching the Top 5 on the R&B charts. In the mid-2000s, the band took a more independent route, releasing Livin’ the Luxury Brown (2005) and E-Life (2008) through their own label, Caged Bird Records. E-Life spawned the hit single “Nothing Left to Say,” which became their first Top 30 R&B single in nearly a decade.
