Sizzla Kalonji was born in the rural community of Scotts Hall, St. Mary, Jamaica, to devout Rastafarian parents. Raised in the August Town area of Kingston, he was immersed in the principles of the Bobo Ashanti sect of the Rastafari movement from an early age.
He attended Dunoon Technical High School, where he studied mechanical engineering. During his teenage years, Sizzla developed a passion for music, often performing on his father’s sound system, Black Steel Sound, which was based in their garage. This exposure to music laid the foundation for his future career.

Breakthrough and Early Success
Sizzla’s musical journey began in the mid-1990s when he started recording for the Zagalou label. His collaboration with producer “Bobby Digital” Dixon led to a series of successful singles. A significant turning point came in 1995 when he began working with Philip “Fatis” Burrell’s Xterminator label, leading to the release of his debut album, Burning Up. The follow-up album, Praise Ye Jah, solidified his reputation in the reggae community.
In 1997, Sizzla released Black Woman & Child, which featured the hit title track and became a cultural anthem. His subsequent albums, including Kalonji (1998) and Royal Son of Ethiopia (1999), further established his prominence in the reggae genre. By 1998, he received his first nomination for Best International Reggae Artist at the MOBO Awards.
